Making Sense of the Bible: Rediscovering the Power of Scripture Today
In this new study, Adam Hamilton invites us into an honest conversation
about the Bible. The book begins with foundational questions such as, How
and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the
scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever
wrong?
From there, Hamilton considers the real questions people frequently
ask that continue to divide Christians and denominations alike, including:
• Were Adam and Eve real people?
• Why is God so violent in the Old Testament?
• Why would Paul command women to "keep silent in the church"?
• Is Jesus the only way to salvation?
• How does God view homosexual people?
• Is the Book of Revelation a guide to the End Times?
This class will address these often misunderstood biblical themes leading
learners into a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear
God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving.
The class is led by Dr. Jim Clardy and Claudia Hunter, and will meet Fridays,
10:00 – 11:30 a.m. beginning August 15th.

New “Covenant Bible Study” Offered at St. Mark’s
Covenant Bible Study is an in-depth group study that centers on our
relationships with God, with each other, and with the world. It differs
from other Bible studies in that it emphasizes the biblical concept of
Covenant—the enduring commitment between God and God’s people—as a unifying
pattern throughout the entire Bible.
This 24-week study covers the whole Bible by moving between the Old
and New Testaments, discussing books from each in a way that shows the
interconnectedness of scripture as a whole. Each class includes a
thought-provoking 20-minute video conversation between biblical experts
that leads the group into further discussion and reflection.
St. Mark’s is offering two classes of Covenant Bible Study:
1) Sundays, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. beginning Sunday, August 17th in Room
1203, led by Dr. Jim Clardy. Child Care Provided.
2) Tuesdays, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in Room 1203, led by Kathy Edwards.
